Recent research shows that emotional abuse is one of the most common forms of harm experienced by college athletes, yet it remains largely unaddressed in formal policies. While athletic organizations have established systems to handle physical and sexual misconduct, emotional maltreatment (i.e. verbal degradation, manipulation, and controlling behavior) usually goes unrecognized and unregulated.
An article by NPR highlights the experiences of student-athletes who faced long-term psychological effects as a result of emotionally abusive coaching environments. Unfortunately despite clear evidence of harm, many institutions lack the structures needed to properly identify, prevent, and respond to emotional abuse in sports.
